Files Backup

For this you require an FTP program which transfers files to and from a server.  The most highly recommended (and free!) program is Filezilla which can be found at http://filezilla-project.org/  Follow the install instructions on the site & with the download to set-up.

In Filezilla:

(a) Open Site Manager via <Files><Site Manager>

(b) Click on the <New Site> button and name the site SalfordSAC

(c) Set the following:

Host:          salfordsac.org.uk

Servertype: FTP - File Transfer Protocol

Logontype: Normal

User:          (See admin email for details)

Password:   (See admin email for details)

Comments: Salford SAC domain

(d) Connect to the site by clicking on the down arrow just under the <Files> menu and select <SalfordSAC>

(e) This will open a tree menu on the right hand side of the window under Remote Site:  Under the root directory you will find three directories of interest:

salfordsac.org.uk - The current working website

oldsite.salfordsac.org.uk - the old frontpage website - this should not change

testsite.salfordsac.org.uk - the test site for checking major revsions to the working site - a copy of salfordsac.org.uk

The other directories here are essential system files and must not be touched.

(f) On the left hand side under Local Site: you will see your computer drives & directories.  Select a location for the backup files.  You will need at least 30Mb free space (this will grow with user files).

(g) In the upper left hand window right click on the directory where the backup will be stored and select <Create Directory>

(h) Name the directory  yyyy-mm-dd - SalfordSAC.org.uk  inserting todays date in yyyy-mm-dd (use this format to ensure correct sorting).

(i) Click and drag the salfordsac.org.uk directory from the Remote Site: to the newly created directory on the Local Site:

This will transfer all the files on the website to your local PC.  To check progress Click <view> on the Filezilla menu and ensure there is a tick next to <Transfer Queue> At the bottom of the window will be three tabs: Queued Files, Failed Transfers & Successful Transfers.

(j) Approximately 2,500 files (this will grow with user files) will be transfered. Ensure that they have all been transfered sucessfully.

Note: You may have already created this directory if you have performed the Files Backup first.  Use the same directory for the same day.

The files backup is now complete.
Do not forget to backup the database at the same time!
